After having sent in your pre-applications, you await the application material from the colleges. This is the right time to familiarise yourself with the tests, which almost all colleges will require you to take. The results of these will be used at admission time.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is compulsory for all students. You can obtain a registration form along with the test bulletin from the USIS. Your completed form along with the demand draft should be sent to the director of the Institute of Psychological and Educational Measurement (IPEM). TOEFL scores will be sent directly to three institutions of your choice.
Those of you who are going for undergraduate studies, need to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The SAT is held five times every year. The three-hour SAT-I accesses verbal and mathematical reasoning. The one-hour SAT-II tests test your knowledge of some particular subjects.
Check the requirements of the colleges you are considering. Send in your registration for the date you intend to take the test. If you have registered for SAT before, you can register to take the test again over the phone. If you have missed the registration deadline, you can try to take the test as a standby. Standbys are accepted if space is available.
If you are an MBA applicant, you need to take the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT). This test measures general verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills. The GMAT is a computer-based test, which allows students to take the exams at their convenience.
Lastly, those of you who are applying for graduate programs in engineering, sciences or humanities need to register for the Graduate Record Exams (GRE). The GRE is a computer-based test, which includes a general test measuring verbal, quantitative and analytical abilities. It also includes subject tests measuring achievements in various fields. The general test can be taken any time of the year.
So get out your study material and get set for the tests – but don’t forget to look out for the registration deadlines.
