If the go-ahead for grant of leave to men stationed at the borders, as reported in The Indian Express today, is being interpreted as a sign of a tiny thaw in the chill, there is now word that officers will soon be returning to Army training institutes for short-duration courses.
Suspended during the mobilisation that followed the December 13 attack on Parliament, these courses are being revived on the orders of Army chief General S Padmanabhan to the Directorate General of Military Training (DGMT).
These short-term courses range between four to eight weeks. ‘‘It includes the YOs (young officers) course, platoon weapons, electronic warfare, commando course and several others. Different arms and services conduct the courses at their respective training establishments across the country,’’ said a DGMT official.
As of now, these training institutes, like the Infantry School at Belgaum and Mhow, Armoured Corps Centre and School at Ahmednagar and Artillery training school situated at Deolali, are practically empty what with both officers and instructors at the borders because of the on-going tension.
Now instructors are being asked to return to their institutions. Confirming the move, highly placed sources in Army headquarters told The Sunday Express that the start of short-duration courses should eventually lead to the resumption of long-term courses like Staff College and Long Defence Management.
