Chirag United FC at last managed to grab full points with a convincing 3-1 victory over Vasco Sports Club of Goa in the I-League 10th round match at Yuba Bharati Krirangan (YBK) today. Chirag, who were struggling to come out of the relegation zone, now have some breathing space with 12 points, while Vasco went deeper in the mire with two points from 10 matches.
The hosts had to play with 10 men after Dulal Biswas was shown the red card in the 20th minute. Referee OP Thakur penalised him for elbowing Vasco striker Robson. What followed was simply bizarre. Gauranga Dutta head-butted the referee but escaped punishment.
Chirag got their opening goal in the 44th minute when defender Fulkan, trying to clear Snehashis Chakraborty’s shot, put the ball into his own goal.
Chakraborty, who once again had a very good game today, doubled the advantage in the 54th minute as he pouched on a Murithala Ali through pass and slotted home. And the Nigerian striker himself scored the third goal in the 88th minute.
Vasco reduced the margin in the dying moments through their Uzbek striker Nazarof.
Chirag were the dominant team throughout the match and raised the tempo after coach Subrata Bhattacharya introduced veteran Basudeb Mondal after the break. Maybe Bhattacharya missed a trick or two by not playing Mondal in previous matches.
