CHANDIGARH, Nov 12: The working of the Telecom Departments in Chandigarh was affected today because of quot;tool-down and pen-downquot; strike by the Class III and IV employees.

The strike call was given by all the five unions of Telecom Department in the country to protest against, what they alleged negative attitude of the government towards vital issues and non-implementation of agreement on pay scales reached last year.

The circle secretaries of various unions here claimed that strike in Punjab was total while in Chandigarh 97 per cent of the employees stayed away from their work.The demands included non-conversion of the department into a corporation, upgradation of pay-scales, lifting the ban on recruitment and stopping discrimination against telecom factories8217; employees.

The local units of these five unions 8212; AITEU, All India Telegraph Traffic Employees Union Class III, All India Telecom Civil Wing Employees Union group C and D, All India Telecom Administrative Officers Employees Union and Indian Telecom Employees Union Lines Staff and Group D also held rallies at various points in the City during the day.The unions have threatened to go on an indefinite strike from a later date if their demands were not accepted.
