Members of a committee who were on a surprise visit recently to inspect the status of illegal constructions around the Dal Lake have said they were not allowed entry into the DGP’s official residence.

The members of the committee, set up by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court to probe the illegal constructions in the green belt area around the Dal Lake, said they were stopped at the entrance of DGP A.K. Suri’s official residence in the high-profile Chesmashahi locality by policemen guarding the place.

‘‘The guards did not allow us to go in. The cops there told us to go back as they had orders that none should be allowed to enter the house for security reasons,’’ one of the members said. ‘‘They refused to relent even after we told them that we had court orders to inspect all the buildings in the area. It seems that construction work still goes on at the DGP’s residence,’’ he added. The three-member committee has as its members the Registrar, Judicial, A. Wahid, Retired Sessions Judge G.N. Mir and Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Asghar Samoon.

While DGP Suri was not available for comment, Assistant DGP Madan Lal said from Jammu that he was not aware of any constructions in the area. ‘‘Why don’t you ask the police officers in Srinagar who are at the helm,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, another parallel committee, which was set up on December 3 by J-K Urban Housing and Development Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir, said it would be submitting its report in a few days’ time to the government. The report, sources revealed, says that more than 100 illegal structures have come up in the green belt.

Sources said many heads are going to roll as a number of influential people have constructed houses in the area without seeking permission from the authorities concerned.

The committee set up by Mir is headed by Kashmir’s Divisional Commissioner Parvez Diwan and has Additional Divisional Commissioner M.S. Rather and the Srinagar DC as members.
