CHANDIGARH, Aug 12: Teaching work in the City colleges and Punjab University was paralysed for the second day today on the strike call by the All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisation (AIFUCTO).

A rally was organised by the agitating teachers at the Sector 11 Government College, where the union leaders reiterated that the strike would be indefinite. The rally was attended by teachers of seven non-government aided colleges of the City, government colleges and the university. Meanwhile, dharnas would be organised tomorrow by teachers at their respective colleges.

Dr Rabinder Nath Sharma and R.R. Rawat, president and secretary of the Chandigarh District Council of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU), today claimed that the strike was complete in all the institutions in the City.

The rallyists passed a resolution condemning Haryana Chief Minister Bansi Lal for imposing the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) on teachers working in the state’s colleges and universities.

Meanwhile, the action committee of the college and universities reviewed the situation at a meeting today and decided to embark on a new programme next week which includes demonstrations, a political convention and a seminar on higher education.
