PATIALA, April 21: The United Teachers Front (UTF), in its meeting today, expressed serious concern over the present political turmoil in the country. By ousting the BJP-led government, the so-called secular parties have put the nation’s affairs at stake. It seems that for them their petty personal agendas have become more important than the socio-economic development of the country.
Kehar Singh, chairman of the UTF, condemned AIADMK supremo Jayalalitha’s high-handedness. He felt that the nation’s affairs cannot be run by blackmail politics and the personal concerns of individual leaders. He was all praise for the Akali Dal and the INLD for their positive role in the entire episode. S. L. Singla, convenor, Nationalist Teachers Council (NTC) said that those who claim to be secular are, in fact, most communal.
These pseudo-secularists have no values, he said. Singla said that the present day political crisis is the result of the degenerated power politics of those politicians who seem to posses neither ideals nor ideology. He was of the view that if the opposition had no viable alternative, it was unethical to plunge the nation into a state of uncertainty. R. K. Sehgal from the Progressive Teachers Front (PTF) said he was was amazed how a single individual could push the entire nation into a political crisis. He said it was sad that people like Laloo Prasad Yadav, Mayawati and Jayalalitha have earned the dubious distinction of turning the spotlight on themselves without bothering about the political health of the nation.
S. S. Khaira, president, Punjabi University Teachers Association, said that the best remedy for the present situation is that the President should immediately invite Vajpayee to form the government, so as to avoid further policy somersaults.
It was the common feeling of the members that although coalition politics has produced instability and uncertainty, the role of present Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has been appreciated. Now, political parties must work towards the healthy overall development of the Indian democracy.
