NEW DELHI, April 21: The naked body of a 38-year-old school teacher was found in her Roop Nagar, north Delhi residence on Monday night. Suchita Sharma, a standard X teacher at Leelavati Vidya Mandir in Shastri Nagar, was smothered to death. There were no other indications of physical or sexual assault.

Sharma had been living at 25, Bangalore Road for the past 15 years. She was married at 18 and had divorced three years later. While she had very little interaction with her landlady, neighbours said that Sharma was a gregarious lady with a lot of friends always dropping by. Most of the callers were male, they added. The police are now trying to track down all the people Sharma knew. They have been questioning boys in the locality, as she apparently tutored some Standard X and XII students who lived nearby. More importantly, the police have recovered unsigned love letters from Sharma’s residence. According to the police, the letters were written by a frustrated lover who talked about unrequited love.

According to the police, Sharma had been killed on Sunday night. She was last seen by her domestic help, who came to clean twice a day. The maid last cleaned the house on Sunday morning. When she returned in the evening, there was no response to her repeated knocks. Presuming Sharma wasn’t at home, the woman left.

There was, however, no response from Sharma either on Monday morning or evening. The maid got worried and informed the landlady, who in turn called the police. They broke down the door of Sharma’s two-bedroom house to find the body on the bed. She had been stripped of her clothes, which lay in a pile on the floor.

According to the police, there were no signs of physical assault apart from a small injury on the nose, which the police said was a result of the smothering. There were no signs of a struggle either in the bedroom or the other room, said the police, leading them to conclude that the entry was friendly and the killer was someone known to her. The police also said that the door was locked from the inside. There are no other entrances to the house. While the house looked disorganised, there were no signs of ransacking, added the police.

According to the autopsy report, Sharma was under the influence of some intoxicant at the time of death. The police claim to have recovered some empty liquor bottles from her house.
