HYDERABAD, FEBRUARY 14: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is likely to table a private member’s Bill in the Budget session of Parliament seeking to bar persons of foreign origin from occupying high Constitutional posts such as those of President, Vice-President and Prime Minister.

Though the party manifesto for the last Lok Sabha election raised this issue, it did not pursue the matter any further and left it to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government at the Centre to do so.

The issue has surfaced again in the TDP in the wake of appointment of a committee to review the Constitution and Nationalist Congress Party leader P.A. Sangma’s statement yesterday that he would raise the foreign origin issue.

“A BJP member has moved a Bill in the Lok Sabha and the TDP too would take up the issue. But we are yet to decide who should move the Bill,” a party MP said.

The Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party, which is meeting here on Feb 21, is expected to finalise the party’s stand on contentious issues such asthe Central Vigilance Commission Bill and the Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Bill.
