Tania Sachdev retains National A chess title

Woman Grandmaster Tania Sachdev -undefeated in the tournament – won the 34th Women’s National A chess here today.

For the Delhiite it was the second consecutive title which she won narrowly. She finished on eight points along with Kiran Monisha Mohanty and Soumya Swaminathan.

However, a better tie-break score (66) tilted the title in her favour. Monisha had 54.5 points, while Soumya finished with 63.5.

Tania, playing on the second board against Padmini Rout (Orissa), played the Angleischek variation of the Spanish Opening from black.

She dominated from the start and converted her advantage into a win.

Tania, Soumya and Kiran qualified for the Indian women’s team that will play the chess Olympiad. Koneru Humpy is directly seeded into the women’s Olympiad team. Swati Ghate, Dronavalli Harika and Nisha Mohota followed and made it to the Indian team for other tournaments.
