CHENNAI, June 6: The Tamil Nadu government is considering floating of a regional airline under the strategy of the Ministry of Civil Aviation to involve the State governments in the field of aviation.
Sources told The Indian Express that the Tamil Nadu government has listed the floating of a regional airline as a terms of reference to develop in aviation in the regional sector. Alternately, the government may enter into a joint venture with Indian Airlines and Alliance Air to operate on regional routes.
A high level committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary with 13 members on the committee. The members are Transport Secretary, Industries Secretary, Public Secretary, Tourism Secretary, Airport Director, Commissioner of Chennai Corporation, Commissioner of Police, Director of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), representative of the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Director of Air Worthiness, Air India Commercial Manager, Jet Airways Executive Director, and Federationof India Air Transport Organisation Secretary.
Among the other terms of reference of the committee are preparation of a Civil Aviation development plan for the State, taking into account traffic projections, plans of the Central and State government, Airports Authority of India, Public Sector and Private Airlines. The other terms of reference are management, takeover and maintenance of some airports in the State, issues relating to airport infrastructure development including supply of water and power and provision of multi-nodal access to airports, environmental matters including the removal of encroachments on airport land and acquisition of land for greenfield.
