Dreaded gangster Jayendra Thakur alias Bhai Thakur’s bail was extended today for eight more weeks by a designated TADA court in Pune. Judge R.S. Mandalik, hearing the Suresh Dube murder case, rejected an application by Dube’s family to cancel the gangster’s bail.

The judge extended the bail on the grounds that public prosecutor Vijay Sawant, on behalf of the state government, had offered no objection.

In his plea, Thakur submitted a medical report which says he suffers from vertigo, insomnia, cervical disc problems, isthemia of the brain, isthemia of the heart and hypertension.

The deceased’s elder brother Shyamsunder Dube had contended that if Thakur remained free in Virar, it would be counter-productive to the case, which is at a crucial juncture. Of the 180 witnesses in the Dube murder case, 20 have fled and remain untraceable since Thakur was released. ‘‘Eight more weeks of Thakur in Virar would mean more witnesses will disappear,’’ he said.
