SY Quraishi is new EC

After keeping everyone including the Election Commission guessing on who would fill the third vacancy, the government today appointed Sports & Youth Affairs Secretary SY Quraishi as Election Commissioner for a five-year term. He would join tomorrow.

After keeping everyone including the Election Commission guessing on who would fill the third vacancy, the government today appointed Sports & Youth Affairs Secretary SY Quraishi as Election Commissioner for a five-year term. He would join tomorrow. Quraishi would be the third member of the Commission after CEC N. Gopalaswami and EC Navin Chawla as the first two.

A 1971-batch Haryana cadre officer, Quraishi has served in a number of positions including Special Secretary in the Health Ministry, Director National Aids Control Organisation (NACO), and Director-General, Doordarshan. He has also served as D-G of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, the country’s largest rural youth development agency.

Indian couple Rajesh and Ramvir Gola were staying at the Hyatt Regency in Kathmandu when anti-government protests turned violent. They jumped from their fourth-floor window to escape the flames, but Rajesh died during treatment. Ramvir returned home with her body, claiming that no one, including the Embassy, helped them.
