NEW DELHI, APRIL 15: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) today reacted sharply to senior BJP leader and former Delhi chief minister Sushma Swaraj’s observation that the Ram Janmabhoomi temple movement was a purely political issue, and asserted that it was “a matter of faith and life and death for the Hindus”.

“We were surprised to read her statement, made in Bhopal on Friday,” VHP senior vice-president Acharya Giriraj Kishore told reporters here this afternoon. “It is possible that the political parties may see it as such in view of their petty interests, but for us, the temple issue remains a matter of faith.”

Deeply upset over the statement, the VHP leader spoke to Swaraj this morning and sought clarification from her. “In response to a question, she said that for the BJP, the temple issue was not a sentimental one. It was a response to the pseudo-secularism practised by the Congress,” the Acharya said quoting the former Union minister, who was recently elected to the Rajya Sabha.

The VHP leader also made it clear that the Ram Janmabhoomi temple would be constructed at the disputed site in Ayodhya, regardless of whichever party was in power at the Centre. “Even the courts have said that there are many issues in the temple dispute which cannot be resolved by anyone. These include the controversy surrounding the birthplace of Ram Lalla. The courts are only adjudicating the title deed,” he said.

He also didn’t find any basis for the courts to decide the fate of the title deed. “The Hindus have been worshipping Ram Lalla at the disputed site for the past 50 years. Even the High Court has refused to intervene in the matter. It is indisputably a place of worship for the Hindus.”

Kishore was certain that the courts would be forced to decide the title deed in favour of the Hindus. “If this is not so, the VHP will carry out an agitation, with the blessings of the dharmacharyas, to force Parliament to enact a law to overturn the court judgement,” he said, citing the Shah Bano case as a precedence.
