LONDON, July 13: Surrey won their first Benson and Hedges Cup since 1974 today and immediately dedicated it to a team-mate killed last year.

After a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Kent at Lord’s, captain Adam Hollioake gave a special mention to young wicketkeeper Graham Kersey, who died on New Year’s eve following a car crash in Australia.

The ease of Surrey’s win was largely due to a punishing 98 from 112 balls by the captain’s younger brother Ben Hollioake.

He and Alec Stewart (75 not out) shared a second wicket partnership of 159 and although Hollioake fell two short of his century, Stewart and Graham Thorpe safely saw Surrey to victory with five overs to spare.

Adam Hollioake paid tribute to his 19-year-old brother afterwards. “His strength of character and ability to play on such a big stage is something not everyone’s blessed with,” he said.

The brothers, born in Melbourne and raised in England, played in the One-Day Internationals against Australia earlier this season but have yet to make a Test debut. But they have been summoned to a get-together with the squad before the fourth Test at Leeds next week.

If it was “the best day of my career” for Adam Hollioake, it was another depressing one for Kent, losing the final for the fourth time in 11 years after scoring only 212 for nine off their 50 overs.
