Further fuelling the controversy over the recent surrender of 79 Naxalites before Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh, Mahesh Baghel, the BJP MLA from Keshkal in Bastar, from where the people had surrendered, claimed the people were in fact “innocent tribals who had been persuaded” to surrender.
The parliamentary secretary also demanded an inquiry, alleging that they were neither Naxalites nor even members of Sangam, grass-root level supporters of the Communist Party of India (Maoist). Baghel, who called on the Chief Minister to apprise him about the situation, stated that Singh has promised to conduct an inquiry into the matter.
“He has assured to conduct an inquiry and take stern action against if any police official is found guilty of stage-managing such a surrender,” he added. Baghel claimed that some of the weapons, which were brought during the surrender, were in fact licenced. He said they would be produced later. “The police, by organising such a programme in the state capital, had tried to claim credit for the surrender of Maoists, but it has tarnished the image of the government,” Baghel added.
Chhattisgarh Police has been embroiled in a major controversy following criticism that it has enacted a surrender drama. The state police had organised a function at its headquarters in the state capital on January 3 where 79 tribals, including women, surrendered before the CM and took oath expressing full faith in the Constitution of India and resolving to return to the national mainstream. CWC member and former CM Ajit Jogi has also demanded a high-level probe into the matter saying that such incidents would not help solve the problems of Naxalism in Bastar region, where hundreds of tribals were being killed in Naxalite related incidents every year.
He said the CM could not escape from his responsibility. He said the state government must publish a white paper on the surrender.
