AHMEDNAGAR, Jan 1: The curator of the Aitihasik museum here, Milind Joshi, has called for the need to undertake systematic excavations at Waghdhav cave in a hillock near Supe in Ahmednagar district. These caves may be of the same kind found recently at Sautada near Jamkhed, Joshi said after visiting the place.

Supe, which about three centuries ago was a major trading centre in this region, was established by a nobleman Shabusinh Parmar (Pawar) in the 15th century, according to information. The village was connected with the princely states of Dhar and Dewas, now in Madhya Pradesh.

Rodgya hillock near the village houses about eight caves now covered in mud and overgrown grass. These are dedicated to Shiva village elders believe.

Legends about the hillock say these caves were inhabited by saints. The villagers claim to have listened to them singing bhajans during nights. According to ninetyfive-year-old Vithabai Pawar, she had heard them many times.

The cattle-rearers in the village claim to have seen a cow leaving the the cave every morning and returning in the evenings.

Another villager Bajirao Nandiwale rememberes having crawled into one of the caves while chasing a hyena about five years ago. According to him, the entrance of the cave was cramped, but the caves were spacious inside.

Another legend says Shabusinh Parmar had used the caves as his treasure trove which he had conquered during his campaign and brought to Supe then Sukhewadi using thousands of camels.
