Indian shooters’ gold hunt continued unabated even as Suma Shirur shot a gold in the Air Rifle (women) event and, in the process, also equalled the world record at the Asian Shooting Championships in Kuala Lumpur today. Suma shot 102.3 in the finals and her teammate Deepali Deshpande, who claimed a ‘quota’ place for the Athens Games, finished behind her to win the silver.

The Indian team of Shirur, Deshpande and Poornima Zanane also claimed the team silver with a total of 1188/1200. Fortunately for the Indians, on countback they pipped the Chinese who had an identical score and had to satisfy themselves with the bronze. The gold went to the Koreans.

Meanwhile, Ronak Pandit increased his gold haul with a third gold in the junior event of the Sports Pistol while teammate Bhrigu Dutt finished with a silver. The two combined also with Manoj Kumar to win a team gold for a cumulative total of 1701/1800. The silver in the event went to Thailand (1669) and hosts Malaysia had to be content with the bronze (1645).

But in the double trap event, the shooters had an off day with only Major Rajyavardhan Rathore measuring up to some standards to grab a spot in the finals. Rathore with a score of 134/150 managed the final spot and after shooting 42/50 in the finals finished sixth. However, his teammates Moraad Ali Khan (122) and Ronjon Sodhi (120) failed to make the finals. India have won seven gold, two silver and one bronze medals so far.
