A suicide bomber struck a Shi’ite mosque during a funeral in Mosul on Thursday, killing as many as 30 people and wounding dozens in a fresh attack against the country’s newly-empowered majority.

Hospital officials there said at least 17 bodies had been taken to the morgue and at least 40 people were wounded.

In Baghdad, insurgents posing as policemen killed a police chief, stopping his truck at a fake checkpoint, asking his name, then shooting him in an attack claimed by al Qaeda followers.

Iraqi Police found bodies of four Iraqi soldiers shot dead and dumped by insurgents in western Iraq. Insurgents targeted Lieutenant-Colonel Ahmed Obeis, travelling to work, at Salhiya police station in central Baghdad, was shot dead along with two other policemen while one guerrilla filmed the attack. —Reuters
