PUNE, May 20: Even as the construction of a new subway near the Bharti Vidyapeeth (BV) entrance gates on the busy Pune-Satara highway, is nearing completion, whether or not it would benefit the common citizens still remains unclear.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) authorities, who had organised a visit of media persons to the construction site, were shocked to find a notice board at the entrance gate of Bharti Vidyapeeth stating that the `Vidyapeeth road’ was `private property’ and hence cannot be used by the public.

The subway links the Satara road to Vidyapeeth road. If the common citizens are disallowed to use the Vidyapeeth road then the subway would only benefit the college authorities and its students.

It may be interesting to note that the Vidyapeeth road is one of the approach road to Ambegaon. Also, its the sole approach road to several housing societies which lay beyond the Bharti Vidyapeeth premises. Several residents from these housing societies have time and again complained that the Vidyapeeth authorities often restrain them from using the road, particularly during the night.

Though the 80-feet wide road was constructed by the Bharti Vidyapeeth authorities, its a Development Plan (DP) road and as such the PMC should have acquired it long ago. Manohar Bhate, officer on special duty (land acquisition), PMC, said that he would investigate the issue within a week.“We will take the possession of the road before the subway is constructed”, he assured.

Civic road department chief P T Pawar said the nine-meter wide and 265-meter long (including the approach roads) subway would be constructed by this year end and the Paud Phata flyover would be completed by August 15, this year.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said the designation gives law enforcement “enhanced powers to combat a group that has instilled fear through violence and intimidation”.
