MANDI GOBINDGARH, July 13: The National Union of Journalists (India) here today said that newspapers and news agencies all over India would go on a strike if the wage board, headed by Justice Manisana, did not submit its report by September 30.

The NUJ(I), at its 11th biannual conference, resolved to urge the Union government to ensure that rights of the press were protected and attacks on journalists stopped.It also resolved to hold demonstrations at district levels.

In another resolution, the conference decided to form a committee for solving the problems of freelance journalists. A computer training course on “cyber journalism” was also held on the occasion. As many as 700 journalists are attending the conference being presided over by N. K. Trikha. The conference adopted a resolution mourning the death of various journalists, including Nikhil Chakravarty, Shiv Dass Sharma (Chandigarh), Kamla Prasad Awasthi (Varanasi), Vinod Kumar (Hapur), Vishnupad Mathur (Lucknow), Prakash Purohit (Garhwal), Gopal Pathik (Madhya Pradesh) and Acharya Triloki Nath (Mathura).
