The Assembly elections scheduled next month have set the stage for another round of verbal duel between Chief Election Commissioner J.M. Lyngdoh and the Sangh Parivar.
The BJP and its Parivar constituents today attacked Lyngdoh for asking the people of Himachal to not let ‘‘outsiders’’ interfere in the polling process next month. BJP general secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said a constitutional authority must see that statements do not go beyond his specified role.
‘‘Indians are free to go to any part of the country and participate in its democratic process. This is their right and no body can encroach upon it,’’ he said.
Asked about a possible attempt at communal polarisation, Lyngdoh had yesterday said in Shimla: ‘‘The people of the state (Himachal) should be vigilant and not allow outsiders to communalise the election campaign.’’
RSS spokesman Ram Madhav today said he appreciated Lyngdoh’s concern for communal harmony. ‘‘However, we do not know his definition of communalism. We would not like to infer that his mention of outsiders referred to us. May be, he meant ISI agents,’’ he said.
VHP spokesman Veereshwar Dwivedi was harsher: ‘‘It is an attempt to infringe upon the fundamental rights of citizens who are free to go to any part of the country and participate in its democratic process.’’ Lyngdoh and the Sangh Parivar were engaged in a running battle before the Gujarat polls too.
