SURAT, June 28: A seminar-cum-workshop on `Importance of Communication in Trade and Commerce’ was organised by the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) and the Surat Telecom District to a packed auditorium on Saturday.
Given that Internet has just arrived in Surat, the response from business and trade community as also from students and computer professionals was overwhelming. Presentation on Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and INET was followed by live demonstrations on Internet, which generated a considerable interest among the audience so much so that the organisers were hardpressed to accommodate all and invite them in different batches.
Surat Telecom General Manager Y P Kataria announced that besides Internet other facilities like ISDN, Video conferencing and INET were also available in the city. He said already more than 500 applications had been received by the department for Internet. However, due to technical difficulties some facilities were available only in Mahidharpura, Market, Nanpura, Piplod, Rander and Varachha areas, while the Majura and Piplod exchanges would have access to them by 1999-end.
Ahmedabad Telecom District General Manager (development) P C Gupta giving details of ISDN said, present telephone subscribers could get the facility. Subscribers will have to buy equipment like computers and modem from Department of Telecom-approved centres. Voice, data and image transmission is possible on a single telephone connection in ISDN; two of them can be established simultaneously. In addition to the Rs 1,000 monthly rental, subscribers are required to pay Rs 5,000 minimum charge every year.
Audiences were also made acquainted with other facilities like Dynamic STD/ISD locking facility; Hot Line Facility; abbreviated dialling, Call Transfer, Call Waiting and Morning Alarm service.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional Engineering College lecturer Dhiren Patel and VSNL senior engineer Alpesh Khatri apprised the audience of Internet.
