LUDHIANA, Sept 28: Hundreds of auto rickshaw drivers who had observed a day’s strike in protest against harassment by district authorities here today and were marching back from the rally, went on the rampage damaging a mini local bus, a thee-wheeler carrying passengers and later squatted in the middle of the lmain Ferozpore road near Jagraon bridge.

Police used force to disperse the agitating auto drivers and detained more than 50 persons for causing obstruction to vehicular traffic. However, activists of Auto Rickshaw Workers Federation alleged that police resorted to unprovoked lathicharge in which several persons were injured and many of them had to be hospitalised.

A federation leader Om Parkash Jodha informed media persons that three auto drivers Jaswant Singh Grewal, Satpal and Gurdeep Singh Deepa had sustained fractures and many federation acitivists including Kulbir Singh Nihang were mercilessly beaten up by policemen Some passersby claimed that the police had fired shots in the air to scare away the squatters and those causing damage to passing vehicles but the police denied the charge.

Earlier, addressing a rally of striking auto drivers, Kulbir Singh, Om Parkas and former CPI(M) legislator Tarsem Jodhan alleged that more than 500 auto rickshaws were impounded by the traffic police and heavy penalities were imposed upon the three-wheeler drivers.
