Some two years back, they were among the first to launch a cord blood bank with the promise of storing your child’s precious stem cells for a disease-free future. Now, Chennai-based LifeCell is coming up with what they promise will be the country’s first stem cell transplant hospital.

They are making another promise—not to use the controversial embryonic stem cells and stick to the umbilical cord and adult stem cells.

The centre promises to conduct the stem cell transplants for leukemia, traditionally known as cord blood transplants, there, however, will be therapy available for spinal cord injuries and brain strokes.

‘‘Umbilical stem cell transplants are being conducted in several parts of the world for more than 30 years. We will be using only the established and accepted stem cell treatment for spinal cord injuries and strokes,’’ said Abhay Kumar, Vice Chairman and CEO of Asia Cryo-Cell Pvt Ltd.

The transplant centre is being jointly launched by Asia Cryo-Cell Pvt Ltd, Pioneers and Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute. A Rs 15-crore venture, spread over 15,000 sq ft, the centre is likely to be functional by June 2006.

‘‘The facility will be meant exclusively for stem cell transplants which will be conducted by experienced and renowned stem cell transplant specialists from around the world,’’ said Kumar, and added, ‘‘We have a tie up with Cryo-International and other renowned hospitals around the world.’’

The centre will initially focus on haematological and oncological ailments and expand to other areas in phases. LifeCell has committed an investment layout of Rs 40-50 cr over the next 2-3 years to stem cell banking, research and therapy. ‘‘Being the pioneers in cord blood stem cell banking in India, LifeCell is in touch with other leading players to initiate an association of all agencies working on cord blood cells to ensure a healthy growth of the industry,’’ said Kumar. The company is also planning to bring clinical trials (on stem cell-based therapies) and manufacturing partnership to the country.
