The University Grants Commission (UGC) has come up with the novel idea of offering dual degrees to technical education students if they are willing to spend a few more years in the campus.

The UGC, working with a mandate to change the 50-year-old system, has set up a study group of outside experts to develop the scheme. The group recently met to discuss the pros and cons. UGC acting chairperson Professor Arun Nigavekar said: ‘‘It is still at a preliminary stage. But the idea was mooted because of the changing job scene and to provide students more opportunities. It would not be done at the cost of undermining the knowledge input.’’

Students would be allowed to go for dual degrees only if there is ‘‘subject compatibility’’ and ‘‘pre-requisite clearance’’. For instance, a BE Electronics student can go for a degree in Telecommunications by spending a year-and-a-half more in the campus, Nigavekar said.

‘‘The idea is to make the system open and flexible, and remove compartmentalisation of higher education. This would bring in the inter- and multidisciplinary approach that we now lack. It is widely prevalent in the US and Britain.’’

The scheme will first have a test-run in the less politicised technical and professional education sectors. ‘‘The pre-requisite clearance and subject compatibility would have to be looked into before students are allowed to opt for dual-degree courses,’’ Nigavekar said. The study group may submit its report in three months .
