MUMBAI: Shailendra K Tiwary, Assistant Commissioner, Customs and Central Excise (Mumbai) passed away on Tuesday. He was 48. Tiwary is survived by his parents, wife, two sons and a daughter.

Rs 2 lakh award for Sanskrit scholar

NEW DELHI: Well known Sanskrit scholar Baldev Upadhayaya has been selected for the fourth Ramkrishna Dalmia Shreevani Alankaran’ for his contribution towards promoting Sanskrit language. He has been chosen for his book Vimarsh Chitamani. The award consists of Rs two lakh in cash and an idol of Shreevani.

Education official gets RI for graft

SURAT: After seven years, Nasiruddin Mahmmad, an administrative officer of Navsari district town has been sentenced to two years’ Rigorous Imprisonment by the district judge for demanding a bribe of Rs 1,000 for admission of a girl in the first standard. He was trapped by the Anti-Corruption Bureau officials while accepting the bribe at his residence in 1990. The judge, Purnimaben Shukla, noted that the accused was a public servant and had misused his power for corrupt practices in the field of education.

Tarkunde’s plea to Farooq Abdullah

NEW DELHI: Noted civil rights activist, V M Tarkunde has suggested appointment of a committee for examining the release of the militants in Jammu and Kashmir against whom there was no evidence of any heinous crime saying this would help normalise the situation. The senior Supreme Court advocate has also requested the release of Hurriyat leaders, in a letter written to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah.

Tripura welcomes Chakma accord

AGARTALA: Tripura on Wednesday welcomed the peace accord signed by the Bangladesh Government and Chakmas on Tuesday saying it would not only end the 23-year old tribal problem but also ensured proper rehabilitation of the refugees in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). Tripura Chief Minister Dasarath Deb said the accord would be of much help to Chakma refugees’ repatriation and solution to their problem. Mrinal Kanti Chakma, president of the Humanity Protection Forum, a human right organisation of Tripura, said the accord, if implemented properly would solve the problems in the CHT.
