NEW DELHI: A Prominent CPI-M leader from Uttar Pradesh Gulab Singh was shot at and seriously injured at Saharanpur where the state conference of the party was being held, the party said on Wednesday. Gulab Singh, a member of the UP State Secretariat of CPI-M, has been admitted to the PGI Hospital in Chandigarh.

Condemning the attack, the party politburo in a statement here demanded immediate inquiry into incident. The party said the attack on Tuesday, right opposite the conference venue, had taken place due to laxity of the state administration in providing security at the venue.

Alleged child killer dies in custody

KOLHAPUR: Anjanabai Gavit, who was allegedly involved in murder of 13 children, died in judicial custody at the sub jail here this evening following a heart attack, police said. The 52-year old woman, who was arrested for abducting and murdering the children from many places in Maharashtra last year, was lodged at the Bindu Chawk sub jail. Anjanabai’s two daughters, Renuka and Devki, and son-in-law Kiran Shinde were also arrested last year.

Armed activists kill 2 in Churachandpur

IMPHAL: At least two villagers were killed and one was injured in an attack by armed Paite activists in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Wednesday. Official sources said armed Paite activists attacked the three Kuki villagers near Thningkhangphai area in Churachandpur district at about 5.00 am. Two Kuki villagers, identified as Thangjagin (50) and Nehthinthag (30), were killed on the spot while another villager, identified as Lulkhothang (35), was injured, the sources said.

Probe into Bangarappa’s assets

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Courtpassed interim orders directing counsel for CBI to submit the status report on its investigation into the assets acquired by S Bangarappa during his tenure as Karnataka Chief Minister.

A division bench passed the orders in a public interest litigation filed by B R Nana Rao, a retired superintendent of police, CBI, praying a direction to the CBI to register a case under Prevention of Corruption Act and to investigate in detail into the assets acquired by Bangarappa. The bench, comprising Chief Justice R P Sethi and Justice A M Farooq, also ordered that the report be filed by means of an affidavit of some responsible officer of the CBI.
