CHENNAI:An aortic valve replacement using minimum invasive technique was performed on 57-year old Mannavalan at the Vijaya Hospital. Dr D Janardhana Reddy, who performed the surgery along with Dr Ram Mohan, told mediapersons on Monday, that the incision was just 9 cm long, compared to the 25 cm incision in the conventional method.

The advantages of the smaller incision was that surgery duration was shorter, less pain and usage of blood, reduced incidence of infection, faster recovery and a smaller scar. The post-operative stay would also be considerably reduced.Earlier, a long vertical incision used to be made, splitting the breast bone and opening the chest cavity-resulting in a lot of bleeding. While the regular valve replacement method cost Rs 75,000, fees for the new opeartion would be be reduced by 15 per cent.
