Ex-minister wakes up to news of his death8217;

KOHIMA: Former Nagaland minister Yopikyu Thongstar had the mortification of reading a news item about the Nagaland Assembly condoling his death. The Assembly faux pas occurred on October 15 when it passed the resolution condoling the death of Thongstar, instead of another former member Lipikyu Sangtam, who had passed away on October 13. The news was published by a local daily the next day.

Youth beheaded by Naxals in AP

NAGPUR: Naxalites belonging to Bhamragarhdalam allegedly beheaded a youth and beat his father in Khondinnainwadi in Gadchiroli yesterday, according to police. The deceased, brother of a police constable, was identified as Madhu Walthe Kudiyami. Suspecting Madhu to be a police informer, naxals tied the father and the son in front of their house and later attacked Madhu with an axe.

Lightning kills three in Kerala

KASARGOD: Three quarry workers were killed and one seriously injured when lightening struck them at Neerchalnear here last evening, police said today. The injured have been admitted to the taluk hospital here with severe burns. The tragedy occurred when the victims were returning home in the heavy rains.

Over 6500 electrocuted per year

CALCUTTA: More than 4500 persons die every year due to electrocution and another 2000 succumb to lightning in India, says the latest survey by the Loss Prevention Association of India LPA. The cross-country survey taken up by LPA also found that in manufacturing industries, electrical hazards in the form of shock, burn injuries and explosion fires account for most casualties.
