MUMBAI, December 12: St Stanislaus and St Joseph’s (Vikhroli) emerged champions in the boys’ and girls’ under-16 schools hockey league, respectively. The competition was sponsored by Thums-Up and conducted by the Mumbai Schools Sports Association at the St Andrew’s ground, Bandra today.

In an exciting final, St Stanislaus defeated St Andrew’s 1-0 to bag the Ahmed Sailor Cup. The all-important goal came against the run of play in the 44th minute through Delano D’Souza.

In the tussle for the third place in the boys’ under-16 league, Don Bosco (Matunga) just about managed to beat St Anne’s (Orlem) 2-1. Girish Pimple and Kanisha Bangera scored for Bosco’s and Marshall Nazareth pulled a goal back for Anne’s.

St Joseph’s got the better of St Teresa’s (Santa Cruz) in a long drawn encounter of the girls’ under-16 final. The two were locked goalless at the end of regulation and extra-time before Joseph’s clinched the issue with a narrow 2-1 margin in the nail-biting tie-breaker.

Pranali Gangurde and Samitha Shetty were on target for Joseph’s, while Caroline D’Sa netted Teresa’s lone goal.

A lone goal by Nutan Kudkar turned out to be the match-winner for St Francis Xavier (Kanjur Marg) against Canossa Convent (Andheri) in the tussle for the third place in the girls under-16 league.

At the Don Bosco ground, Matunga, Dominic Savio (Andheri) prevailed 2-1 over St Stanislaus B in the boys’ under-14 league. James Lawrence and Lanton Mathias accounted for the winners and Zaid Attawala did likewise for Stanislaus.

In another match of the boys’ under-14 league, Hindi Vidya Bhavan (HVB) and St Michael’s (Mahim) were concerned in a 1-1 draw. Harsh Sharma netted for HVB and Furkan Shamsi equalised for St Michael’s.

HOC prevail: Hindustan Organic Chemicals (HOC), Rasayani, defeated BEST 4-2 in a Pool A encounter of the BHA third division League at the Mahindra Stadium, Churchgate, today. Manoj Gole (2), Avdhut Mhatre and Pradip Patnaik netted for the winners. P Khanvilkar and D A Shetty reduced the margin for BEST.
