BANGALORE, NOV 19: Ramiah Subramaniam, father of The Indian Express Geneva Correspondent Chitra Subramaniam died last night in Bangalore. Subramaniam, who retired as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Hindustan Fertiliser Corporation (HFC), was a pioneer in the fertiliser industry.

Subramaniam started his career as a foreman with FCI, Sindhri. While he was in FCI, he began the construction work of the world’s largest coal-based fertiliser project in Talcher. He gave shape to the National Fertilisers Ltd where he spent five years as technical director. In 1978, he was called upon to create yet another new organisation, the HFC.

During the ’30s and ’40s, Subramaniam played cricket for the Holkar State, the leading cricket team in the pre-independent India.

Subramaniam leaves behind his wife Janaki Subramaniam, his daughter well-known journalist Chitra Subramaniam and grandchildren Anuradha and Sridhar.
