MUMBAI, Aug 8: “It was a real pity that an impartial report of a Hindu judge had been rejected outright by the Maharashtra government,” according to eminent jurist, Nani Palkhivala.
“We are witnessing a total condemnation of the report by the Hindu government in power,” he said in a press release here today while referring to the Maharashtra government’s rejection of the Srikrishna report, which had been tabled in the House on Thursday last. “This attitude of the government only shows the lowest levels of degradation of Indian democracy and of public life in India, which have been reached in our time,” he added.
Quoting the lofty teachings of Shivaji Maharaj in a letter to Emperor Aurangzeb and those of Muslim leaders like Sayyid Khan and Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, he pointed out that “in no other country in the world, have the values of religious tolerance been practised over centuries as they had been in India”.
