The world’s top squash players today welcomed news that former world champion Jansher Khan of Pakistan will make a comeback to the professional squash circuit.

“It is great that Jansher will return. It will be like Michael Jordan returning to basketball,” said Canada’s Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jonathon Power, who is ranked second in the world. “Jansher’s return will be good for squash. He was one of the top players of all time and I wish him all the best,” said third-ranked Australia’s David Palmer.

Power and Palmer were among leading squash players in Hong Kong to compete in the us $100,000 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Open, which starts tomorrow.

Jansher, an eight-time World Open champion and six-time British Open champion, announced earlier this month that he was coming out of retirement after a three-year break at the age of 34.

The last major tournament he competed in was the 1998 British Open where he lost to reigning World No. 1 Peter Nicol of England.

Injury to both his knees forced Jansher to step down from the professional circuit after he dominated it for more than decade.

“It will just be a matter of fitness for Jansher. If he is able to get back to the old form, he will be a real danger. It will be nice to play him and beat him,” said Malaysian Ong Beng Hee, who is Asia’s top-ranked player.
