A special cell of the Haryana Vigilance Bureau headed by a Deputy Inspector General would investigate the murder of Kaithal-based scribe Parmanand Goel who was shot dead by three unidentified persons at his residence in Kaithal yesterday.

The government took this decision after the family of the slain journalist suspected involvement of top political leaders.

Meanwhile, Leader of BJP Legislature Party Krishan Pal Gujjar has demanded a CBI probe into the matter.

‘‘We had been cautioning the government against the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state. Unfortunately, journalists have been under attack in the state, two having lost their lives and many implicated in fabricated cases,’’ raged Gujjar.

He said the Om Prakash Chautala government seemed to have adopted a policy of registering false and frivolous cases to silence the opponents. ‘‘This won’t stop us from raising our voice against injustice,’’ said Gujjar adding that the incident had further vindicated their allegation of police anarchism, as the journalist’s family had pointed fingers at police officers and Chautala.

Congress leader Kamal Sharma accused the Chautala government of trying to suppress freedom of the press. ‘‘The incident has belied the claims of the government regarding the law-and-order situation in the state. It is nothing but vandalism,’’ he alleged.
