MUMBAI, OCT 5: Breach Candy Hospital has set up a task force in the hospital to ensure that everything functions like clockwork when Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee undergoes his much-talked about knee surgery by Dr Chittaranjan Ranawat on October 10.

According to Cyrus Engineer, General Manager (Planning and Marketing), each person in the task force has been given a specific job and will see to the smooth functioning of the operation theatre, nursing and post-operative care so that the Prime Minister’s osteoporosis is well taken care of.

Mumbai MTNL is studying the facilities in the hospital for setting up a communication centre and will submit a report to the PMO in New Delhi, after which officials will be deputed to set up the telephone and fax lines, Engineer said.

Further, the rooms on the seventh floor — where Vajpayee and his staff will be staying — are being refurbished and given a new look. The operation theatre complex on the second floor is also being repainted.

Incidentally, Breach Candy Hospital is also believed to have been on standby at present for Russian president Vladimir Putin who is on a visit to the city today. Engineer revealed that the hospital has often been on standby for several other VIPs visiting Mumbai, including US President Bill Clinton.

“In fact, the Secret Service and the medical staff from USA had visited the hospital three months before Clinton’s visit, and they were quite impressed with the facilities,” he said.

Dr Nandu Laad, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, is in the process of co-ordinating the entire exercise and is also making arrangements for the other patients who are going to be operated by Dr Ranawat. “He has also promised to give a detailed account of the operation on the PM later,” Dr Laad added.
