Indian Special Forces personnel sent to the US for joint exercises with their American counterparts in Alaska returned today. The exercise, named Operation Geronimo Thrust, was the first-ever ‘‘live fire exercise conducted in high altitude conditions by Indian and American paratroopers’’.

Reports said the exercise has left Pakistan worried as it was conducted in similar conditions as the operations in Kargil sector in 1999.

The exercise gave the Indian paratroopers an opportunity to take a look at the operational methods and equipment of their American counterparts. Sources said the Indian Special Forces may now acquire some equipment used by Americans.

The first few days of the exercise were spent on ground training, equipment familiarisation, parachute practice and understanding each others’ techniques and procedures. This was followed by the airborne exercise, which was kicked off by insertion of scouts and pathfinders of both the armies by helicopters.
