HISAR, Sept 17: Guru Jambheshwar University (GJU) will soon set up a special cell for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribe students.

K. L. Johar, vice-chancellor of the varsity, said that the University Grants Commission (UGC) had already sanctioned the project. The UGC will pay for the salary of a coordinator and other officials for the first five years of its creation.

The cell is being set up to look after the interests of the SC/ST students and employees in the varsity and to prepare students to appear in the civil service examinations.

Johar said that the GJU has received an offer from the Research and Training Centre of Howard University, Washington, for a collaborative programme with the department of Applied Psychology in rehabilitation, counselling, special education and multi-cultural issues in disability. He said that Dr Walker from Harvard University was likely to visit GJU soon to chalk out plans for collaboration.

Students of M.Tech Computer Science and Engineering will get a scholarship of Rs 45,000 for the duration of the course. The UGC has agreed to provide scholarships within three years of the inception of the programme, he said.

Each student will get a scholarship of Rs 2,500 per month every year. The course is much sought after not only among students, but also among professionals. “Recently, a scientist from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been given admission on the request of its director,” Johar said.
