CHENNAI, JAN 9: The conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the various State Legislatures would be held on January 29 and 30 at Chandigarh.
Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker PTR Palanivel Rajan confirmed this in a chat with The Indian Express on Monday.
The conference assumes significance as Palanivel Rajan had been pressing Lok Sabha Speaker GMC Balayogi to convene such a meet to discuss the powers of Speakers in view of the recent Madras High Court Judgment. The court, in the Tamaraikani versus Tamil Nadu Assembly matter quashed and observed as `illegal’ the warrant issued by the Speaker on March 22, 1999, to arrest and commit Tamaraikani to prison for a week for assaulting Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam in the House.
The court said the Speaker’s move was not supported by an Assembly resolution.
The Speaker said he would leave for New Delhi on Tuesday to attend a parliamentary sub-committee meeting to be presided over by Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker PM Sayeed. Besides himself, Assembly Speakers of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi would participate.
