PUNE, APRIL 9: Congress president Sonia Gandhi would kick start a ‘Save Constitution’ agitation on April 14 at Nagpur to protest the move of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to review the Constitution, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said on Sunday.
Speaking after inaugurating a newly constructed Ambedkar Bhavan here, Deshmukh said Congress would launch the agitation against the NDA government as the ‘motive behind the constitutional review is questionable’.
"This is because when the framers of the Constitution had left enough scope for making constitutional ammendments, it is not clear as to why the NDA is eager to review the constitution. The very purpose of the whole excercise of reviewing the Constitution is only to change the basic structure of the Constitution which needs to be opposed tooth and nail," the Chief Minister said.
He said Congress will not hesitate to take to the streets to save the Constitution.
Deshmukh said the Democratic Front government in Maharashtra was also considering framing suitable laws to prevent people from misusing the facilities granted to the backward class people by furnishing bogus caste certificates, Deshmukh said.
He said the government was also considering to broaden the powers of the Mayors in various cities.
MPCC chief Govindrao Adik, who was also present, criticised the NDA government on the constitutional review issue.
