Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa today told the Assembly that the state intelligence wing was not monitoring AICC president Sonia Gandhi. Jayalalithaa’s clarification followed a day after PWD Minister O Panneerselvam denied the intelligence wings’ role in this regard.

‘‘In fact, I only asked Panneerselvam to issue a statement to refute the allegation that Sonia was being watched,’’ said Jayalalithaa replying to deputy leader of the opposition S. Durai Murugan.

Murugan wanted to know whether Maran alone was under the close surveillance of the Tamil Nadu police if the Chief Minister’s statement was true.

Jayalalithaa replied that, ‘‘When I talked of a secret meeting between Sonia Gandhi and Maaran, i did not mean that the intelligence wing was monitoring her closely’’. She further pointed out that the intelligence sleuths might have friends in Delhi and that they may have got the information from them. ‘‘I don’t know whether the information I got in this connection was right or wrong. But, both Maaran and Sonia have, so far, not denied my statement,’’ she said.
