Congress President Sonia Gandhi left for New York to address the United Nations General Assembly on October two, when the international body will celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday as World Non-Violence Day.

The United Nations had adopted an Indian resolution earlier this year to declare the day as International Non-Violence Day as a tribute to the Satyagraha movement launched by the Father of the Nation.

Newly appointed Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi will also attend the function.

This is Rahul’s first trip abroad after taking over as AICC General Secretary.
