PUNE, Sept 10: The 88,000-odd residents of Khadki cantonment who have been reeling under a severe water scarcity crisis for the past few days, can now hope for relief.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has agreed to allocate Rs. 1.20 crore towards the erection of a water sump and a separate pipeline to combat the water problem plaguing the residents. The decision was taken by PMC Commissioner Rajiv Agarwal at a joint meeting of the elected members of the Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) along with the local MLA Rambhau Moze here today.
Frustrated by the perennial water shortage, the first-ever joint meeting was held here on Wednesday between the officials of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), KCB elected members and officers of the Public Works Department where a decision was taken create a network of six inch and 12 inch pipes throughout the cantonment.
The meeting was hurriedly arranged after the cantonment board received a letter announcing the allocation of Rs. 60 lakh from the MLA fund towards the water shortage currently being faced by the cantonment.
Board vice president Suresh Kamble revealed that the officials had decided to form an estimate of the funds required towards the pipelines which are expected to considerably ease the low water pressure problems.
PMC has agreed to contribute Rs. 60 lakh towards the project. A decision was taken to replace all the old pipelines. The officials also decided to begin work on the water sump within the next eight days.
With work presently in progress at the pipelines joining the Chatushrungi Water Works and and SNDT, it is believed that the water pressure will improve considerably within the next fortnight. Moreover, the corporation has also granted KCB permission to fill its water tankers from the Holkar Water Works for distribution of water in the cantonment areas.
The Rs. 14.5 lakh water booster, which would be installed by November this year, is also expected to improve the water pressure. The meeting was attended by vice president Suresh Kamble, Rambhau Moze, Baliram Sawant, Tushar Gandhi, assistant engineer Arun Godbole and health superintendent Bharat Naik.
