NEW DELHI, MAR 6: The Customs department has detected a major racket involving bogus software exports by certain companies. Highly placed sources in the department said that certain consignments were intercepted recently following tip-offs that old and pirated software with very little market value was being exported at highly inflated prices.
In one particular case, the customs have detected software downloaded from Internet being exported. Sources said that the software consignment originated from a Delhi company and was being routed through another well known export house to a suspected bogus buyer overseas. Custom officials, however, refused to name the companies involved at this stage as the investigations were at a crucial juncture. The department suspects that these exporters would rake in huge profits on such bogus exports by way of credit availed under the duty entitlement passbook scheme DEPB.
