
The new interaction
Riyaz Khambatta was installed as the president of the Interact Club of Poona District no. 3130 for the year 1999-2000 by Satish Chodankar, president of the parent Rotary Club of Poona District no. 3130. The function took place on July 26 at the Poona Club. The others on the board are Simranjeet Arora, Gunveen Lamba, Reshma Mahatani, Pooja Shah, Ashind Thukral, Shiv Agarwal, Ruchita, Kanu Priya Sekhri, Rohan Deshmane and Kunal Handa.
Unity and diversity
Foreign students studying in Symbiosis contributed Rs 31,000 to towards the Central Army Welfare Fund’. The cheque was presented to Brig. Madan Gopal on the occasion of Foreign Students Day. Foreign students also presented a citation addressed to Gen. S Padmanabhan, GOC-in-C, Southern Command, expressing their sympathy, and appreciation of the valour of the jawans who died in the Kargil war. Fifteen jawans, undergoing treatment at the Artificial Limb Centre at AFMC were specially invited and felicitated by the foreign students. They witnessed a colourful cultural programme of songs and traditional dances presented by students from South Korea. Mauritius, Kenya, Nepal, Bangladesh, Uganda, Eritrea, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Vietnam, India.
Brig. Madan Gopal presented a trophy to Anees El Madani of Sudan, who was selected as the Outstanding Foreign Student of the year. Present on the occasion were Dr S B Mujumdar, founder director, Symbiosis, P L Gadgil, principal, Sabita Gopal, vice president.
A novel effort
Arena Multimedia. the training division of Aptech Ltd, had organised an exhibition of computer artwork designed by their students, at Bal Gandharva Kala Dalan on July 29 and 30. Artwork on various themes created on digital canvas were on display with focus on social themes, and a separate section on Kargil. The event ‘Kala Kriti’ was inaugurated by Dr Mohan Agashe. The event saw around 800 visitors viewing the samples of art put up by students from all eight centres of Arena Multimedia in the city.
A trip to remember
Inner Wheel Club of Pune Central organised a trip for the cancer affected children of Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital to Thunderbolt (video game parlour) on Nagar Road. Eighteen children along with their parents and doctors visited Thunderbolt. Kavita Goel, Shree Datar, Bina Shroff, Anjali Kharadkar, Sudharshan Sharma and Suchi Bhargava distributed juice and homemade snacks. The management of Thunderbolt sponsored it.
For a good cause The Poona Jain Group donated Rs 61,000 to the Kargil Disabled Soldiers’ Fund. The amount was collected through a one-hour programme of dance and drama organised at the Ganesh Krida Mandir. The entire history of the Indo Pak relations along with information on the Kargil war was put forth in the programme. The entire programme was organised by Pravin Rathod and Shobha Rathod.
The English way
The English-Speaking Union (ESU) organised a get together on Sunday, August 8. Life members who were awarded International Scholarships narrated their experiences at Cambridge, London and Oxford. G C Mulay presented a Latin American and ball room dance along with her students.
Solidarity through dance
Nritya Jhankar’, a dance programme was organised by Shri Nritya Nayan (Charitable) Trust at Tilak Smarak Mandir on Monday, August 3, for the Kargil cause.
