CHANDIGARH, June 14: The Snake Cell, launched in the City on June 5, got cracking today be netting its first 8220;catch8221;, the cobra. The snake had wandered out of the wild into a house in Manimajra.

J. Prasad, a resident of Manimajra, had a fright of his life today when he was confronted by a cobra, who had taken a menacing-looking position outside his gate. The cobra sitting apparently in his defence sent the residents of the area into a tizzy even as some of them tried to persuade the snake to relent by placing a bowl of milk in front of him.

A call to the Snake Cell, launched recently in the City by Eco sense, had Rakesh Sharman rushing to the spot. Within minutes, the reptile had been caught with the residents having a sigh of relief. 8220;The main motive is to save snakes and also people. People kill snakes to save their own lives completely disregarding the fact that the poor reptile might not be even poisonous, like rat snakes,8221;says Rakesh Sharma.

The snake, nearly four feet long and jet black in colour, will be soon be released in a forest land, said Sharma.Although this snake was poisonous, but there are others which are not venomous, instead they are good friends of the farmers. Says Sharma, a study showed that each rat hole had nearly 5 to 10 kgs of rice stored in it. 8220;So the service done to farmers by snakes is significant,8221;adds he. Those wishing to contact Snake Cell can dial at 9612 8211; 6401.
