A new kind of tranquiliser which, when used, will make an elephant sleep while standing, is tested successfully at a forest in Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday.

Forest department officials tranquilised a sick 8216;makhna8217; tusk less elephant using this injection at Dhupjhora forest under Murti range in Gorumara National Park.

The elephant, which was found sick on Monday, was traced by a forest department team with the help of five 8216;kunki8217; trained elephants, DFO wildlife Tapas Das said.

Instead of falling down on the ground as in case of old tranquilisers, the animal started sleeping while standing giving members of an attending medical team much better opportunity to investigate its illness.

Meanwhile, two Bisons had strayed into Jitpur village under Alipurduar police station and injured five persons on Monday, Das said.

The bisons were tranquilised and released in a forest, he said adding the animals also injured several cattle. The injured persons were hospitalised and the condition of two of them was stated to be serious. One of the two bisons had an injury inflicted by an arrow on its back, Das said.
