AIZAWL, MARCH 24: Eight persons including six Mizoram policemen were killed in an ambush by suspected People’s Liberation Army (PLA) militants of Manipur near Vaitin hamlet on Mizoram-Manipur border early Wednesday morning, police said.

Commandant of First Mizoram Armed Police (MAP), Hmingdailova Khiangte here said the rebels killed all six members of the police patrol at about 3 am and also shot dead two villagers of Vaitin who were guiding the policemen.

In the first ever attack by the PLA in Manipur, the militants took away three AK-47 rifles, one pistol, one carbine, one self loading rifle and unspecified rounds of ammunition, Khiangte said.

The slain policemen were Assistant Sub-Inspector Zoramsanga, officer-in charge of Sakawrdai police outpost, constables Ngurpuilala, Lalramthara, Lal Tanpuia Malsawmtluanga and Khualtawna, he said. The bodies were being brought to Aizawl.

The civilians killed were Lalramnghaka and Lalthanfela.

Mizoram Inspector General of Police K Lalchhunga, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Commandant of 1st Battalion of Mizoram Armed Police and Superintendent of Police, Aizawl district, along with additional police forces were combing the area.
