Six persons, who were allegedly kidnapped on November 1 from near a bus stand in Phagwara, were rescued by the Jalandhar police on Monday. One of the abductors was arrested along with the vehicle, while five are absconding. The six persons included Suresh, his brother Varinder, Subhash, Rohtaf, Rakesh and Subhash.
They had gone to Vaishno Devi shrine and on way their back to Moth Lubari village in Sirsa district, they stayed at an inn at Hanuman Garhi Mandir in Phagwara, as they had to board a bus the next morning.
They were abducted by six persons and taken towards Tanda in Hoshiarpur district. The family came to know of the kidnapping when Kuldeep Kumar, father of Varinder and Suresh, received a call for Rs 2-lakh ransom.
The police asked Kuldeep to maintain contact with the kidnappers, while they kept a watch on their movement.
The place for delivering the ransom was fixed near Kala Bakra and a cop in plainclothes accompanied Kuldeep. However, the abductors fled in their two vehicles. As the police team chased them, they started pushing the abducted persons out of the vehicle, one by one, said Inspector Angrez Singh.
The police managed to surround one of the vehicles and arrested its driver, Jasbir Singh. The inspector said all the abductors, who were in their early twenties, were unemployed and belonged to good families of Khak village in Tanda.
