CALCUTTA, Nov 6: President K R Narayanan today said that the residence of Sister Nivedita in North Calcutta should be granted heritage status. He made this observation during a private visit to the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture this afternoon.
Narayanan wanted to know whether Sister Nivedita’s residence had been declared a heritage building.
When informed that nuns of the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission had taken up the matter with the authorities concerned, he remarked it should indeed be declared as a heritage building.
Besides serving as Nivedita’s residence, the house on Bosepara Lane also initially housed her school for girls.
Calcutta Municipal Corporation chairman Purnendu Sengupta said yesterday a committee set up by CMC under chairmanship of eminent historian Barun De had recommended both the Bospara House and the school on nearby Nivedita Lane for heritage status. A formal order on the matter was expected soon, he said.
